STEM ? What is it ? When a new weight and pulley system is introduced at nursery, the children were eager to explore, investigate and be those curious learners. To play and learn through STEM STEM is the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and maths and is part of the world around us. It’s everywhere. From the weight of an object, how things work, constructed or designed. Many may assume STEM is a lesson that happens in schools. However let’s never underestimate the power of PLAY based learning and how children are learning about

Mathematics During play, these two boys were developing understanding for weight, heavier than, lighter than, force, momentum, trial error, gravity. Capacity, full and empty. Height, distance, balance. Counting. Less than, more than. Technology- how things work, operate, move? The list goes on! Play is the brains favourite way of learning. We just need to ensure conditions are right and that children have freedom to be curious, discover and explore following their own ideas ! Children are the pilots in their own play, we are the air traffic controllers. Creating and offering those powerful rich play spaces, ensuring conditions are right. Creating opportunities that ignite curiosity

You will need...

  • Loose parts
  • Blocks

Top Tip, the pulley system needs to be attached to the beams in the ceilings to ensure that they have a strong connection, as you don't want them falling down, always risk assess*

Never leave the pulley system down without adult supervision due to strangulation hazards and ensure that the ropes are securely fastened away safely out of reach when not in use.
