International Mud Day

Go back

Summer

International Mud Day happens every year in the Summer months

There are many benefits for us to join in with International MUD DAY & allow children to play in dirt outside on a regular basis

The health benefits of “dirt” include a stronger immune system, fewer allergies, better digestion, less heart disease, better stress management and a natural anti-depressant agent.

We are living in a world of constantly washing hands, anti bac’ing surfaces and keeping our homes and Early Years centres free from the Covid 19 virus & it’s variants that dominated our lives.

But some bacteria and germs are good for our human bodies and the theory, called the “hygiene hypothesis,” is that our bodies need "practice" fighting germs.

‘Recent research has shown that dirt contains microscopic bacteria called Mycobacterium Vaccae which stimulates the immune system and increases the levels of serotonin in our brains, an endorphin that soothes, calms, and helps us to relax. ‘ (3)

‘More Research from Natural England and academics has demonstrated that time in nature also helps :’(2)

  • Improves children's mental and physical well-being
  • Results in happier and healthier children
  • Builds resilience and sets the children up ready to learn
  • Actively engages the next generation to build nature-centric communities

Whatever you do enjoy mud and International Mud Day and demonstrate to children it’s ok to get muddy, we can wash our hands, clean our clothes but those memories and those benefits will last a life time
