Messy clothes at nursery?
Have you ever insisted a child wear an apron to paint and they flatly refused and walked away ?
Do aprons stop learning ? Let’s consider.
How many times have we spotted a children in the midst of creativity, lost in the flow. Covered in paint ?
Has your first thought been, omg look at the mess, look at your clothes? Then instinctively blurted or barked the words “ you need an apron on? The child suddenly stops what they are doing, emotions running through their heads! They have a choice. Follow the instructions demanded of them or put down the brush and walk away?
The moment lost forever !
What message are we telling a child? Their clothes are more important than their learning, fun & enjoyment? That their clothes are the main thing we are concerned about instead of the deep engagement and benefits of the experience? Clothes can be washed.
Memories and learning opportunities last a lifetime. Childhood is fleeting, short!
An ever decreasing window of time. Most certainly a handful of cloth coverings can be available if wanted (old shirts, slip on aprons).
Most certainly they can be selected if the child requires, but as mindful educators we need to slow down, pause and consider.
Refrain and bite our tongues. Be mindful and consciously aware not to interrupt a child when lost in the flow of creativity, artistry or that masterpiece that they have taken so long to create.

Important note
*Know your families well * if located in an area of deprivation ensure you support low income families, who haven’t the funds or resources to keep washing paint covered clothes.
Everyday at The Curiosity Approach we pause and reflect.
We consider our actions and reactions. Could we have done that differently ? Could we have done more ?
